End the corporate welfare for Planned Parenthood

By Scott Tibbs, June 15, 2022

The Bloomington City Council will vote on distributing money from the Jack Hopkins Social Services Fund tonight. The guidelines for the fund state that funding should be for a "one time" expense, but the City Council has made a mockery of this "standard" by giving money to both Planned Parenthood and All Options year after year. The City Council has repeatedly chosen to abuse their authority by wasting tax dollars on political endorsements of an abortion provider and an organization that proudly pays for abortions.

This year, Planned Parenthood is applying for money for birth control. We know that Planned Parenthood has given birth control to girls as young as 13 in the past, even though the age of consent in Indiana is 16. Even worse, they have used tax money to pay for this. The problem is obvious: Birth control can be used to cover up sexual abuse of young girls, because pregnancy is prima facie evidence that sexual abuse has taken place. Will the tax money they are requesting this year be used to give birth control to vulnerable teenage girls?

All Options ended the last fiscal year with $703,835 in assets, after boasting a $447,517 budget surplus the previous year, according to their own fiscal report. Planned Parenthood recently merged with even more branches, significantly increasing the pool of money available to them. Neither organization is a local charity, and money that goes to PP and AO would be better spent with truly local charities that could actually use the money.

It is time for this charade to end. Stop giving taxpayer money to Planned Parenthood and All Options.
