The city council should not have funded "All Options"

Printed in the Herald-Times, June 25, 2021

To the Editor:

I was very disappointed in the Bloomington City Council’s decision to fund "All Options" Pregnancy Resource Center on June 16, especially since none of the councilors even acknowledged that "All Options" reported a massive budget surplus of over $568,000 in their 2019 report and ended the next fiscal year with $703,835 in assets. They also did not acknowledge alternatives such as working with township trustees to distribute diapers.

The social services fund is supposed to be for a one-time investment, but "All Options" comes back year after year asking for money for the same program. The city council is not even pretending to follow their own guidelines.

"All Options" reported paying $57,507 for for 251 abortions in their 2019 report, a 47% increase of the previous year. The next year the fund grew significantly, spending $105,064 to fund 414 abortions. At a time when our politics are so divisive, why does the city council think it is a good idea to give so much money to an organization that thousands of their constituents find morally abominable?

The simple fact is that "All Options" does not need the money they are handed from taxpayers’ wallets. This should have been rejected.
