No corporate welfare for Planned Parenthood

Bloomington Herald-Times, June 2, 2010

To the editor:

When Barack Obama was campaigning for President, one of his primary stated objectives was to improve the tone of politics. (His accomplishments in this area are another matter entirely.)

The Bloomington City Council has an opportunity to accept or reject Obama's stated vision with their votes on the social services funding package.

From 1999-2008, Planned Parenthood received corporate welfare from city government ten consecutive times. These repeated handouts have been unnecessarily divisive, and are an insult to local charities that could actually use the money, because Planned Parenthood clearly does not need a handout.

As I pointed out last month, despite being allegedly a "not for profit" organization, Planned Parenthood and all of its affiliates took in over $1 billion while spending $953.1 million, for a total profit of $85 million.

We are a year and a half removed from Planned Parenthood being embarrassed by a sex abuse scandal exposed by an undercover investigation by Live Action Films. Is this the kind of organization the city council endorses?

It is time for the Bloomington City Council to cut off the corporate welfare to a billion-dollar corporation that is only seeking a political endorsement from city government.
