Councilor Travis,

I observed the quoted e-mail exchange on your web log and I must say I am very disappointed in your uncivil and disrespectful behavior toward Marty Hawk. Councilor Hawk wrote a political and policy-based criticism of the Democrats who control the County Council, and you responded with a personal attack against her, calling her "narcissistic" and accusing her of "shameless self-promotion" for a policy-based criticism.

Why has Hawk not been President of the County Council? I think it might have something to do with the fact that while she has been on the council for 12 years (1989-1992 and 1999-2006) her party has only been in power for 4 of those 12 years. I do not expect Democrats to make a Republican, especially a conservative Republican like Hawk, the president of the body.

Your nasty e-mail to Marty Hawk is another example of a disturbing trend in the local Left, to personalize disagreements that are political or policy-oriented. Your personal attack on Hawk is beneath the level of professionalism I would expect of a County Councilor, and especially the president of the County Council. I believe you owe an apology to Marty Hawk specifically, and to the taxpayers of Monroe County who pay your salary.

Hello Marty,

I have been forwarded your publicized message about the employee raises.

The high regard you have for yourself is impressive. How interesting that you employed the word “shame” in your message.

It is a shame you come across as narcissistic.

Even though you’ve been an elected Councilwoman for many years (13?) you have NEVER been chosen to preside as President in all your tenure as an elected official. It begs the question–what has your own party held against you if you’re as effective as you claim? Even the Republicans must have their tolerance limits for shameless self-promotion such as yours.

Sophia Travis

p.s. The issue of salaries and wages has been far more complex than the simpleton synopsis your attempt at writing suggests.

Subject: county raises

The County Council finally got around to getting done what they absolutely should have done at the appropriate time, during budget hearings and adoption. Both Trent Jones and I had presented the 3% raise request to be voted on during adoption hearings. I presented proof that the additional County Income Tax money plus the gaming money was over a million dollars more than what had been used to compute the revenue. This was not just my opinion but I showed written proof.

Why then, you might ask, did the council not move forward at that time? The Democrats said they would wait until after the election, and they would do it in November. Why?

That gave them their talking points during the election that Mark Stoops used over and over at every one of our debates. He bragged on how low the budget was that they had passed. Of course it was low, they had not included the approximately half million dollars for the county raises.

Now they are saying “Good News! The County Option Income Tax saved the day.” Somehow they think we will forget that we saw proof of that during adoption hearings.

Shame on the Democrats for holding up the county employee raises for their talking points.

Please forward this to anyone who might have an interest.

Thanks,

Marty Hawk
