Subject: Planned Parenthood does not deserve tax money
Date: Sat, 8 May 2004 10:22:33 -0700 (PDT)

To the Bloomington City Council:

The meeting at Bloomington High School South on the growing prevalence of sex acts among teens (especially local teens) is another example of why Planned Parenthood should not receive a taxpayer subsidy from the Bloomington City Council.

The organizers of the meeting (co-sponsored by Planned Parenthood) were determined not to allow any adults into the session with fifth-to-eighth graders and would not allow the session to be videotaped. Officials from MCCSC eventually relented to allow "one" adult into the session but would not allow it to be videotaped. An organizer of the event claimed that having adults in the room would stifle communication among the children.

The fact that the school system, supported by Planned Parenthood, would not allow taxpaying citizens into a public meeting (in clear violation of Indiana's Open Door Law) is an outrage. Planned Parenthood's disrespect for the rule of law and for the rights of taxpaying citizens shows that they do not deserve public funding from the City Council.

Do you know what a "rainblow" is? I won't go into it here, but you can learn about this act in the May 05 Herald-Times. A teacher at Thursday night's meeting said that this is quite common in our local schools. You can also learn about this and many other deviant sexual practices on Teen Wire, a Web site run by Planned Parenthood. I submit to you the following text, cut and pasted from TeenWire.com on May 8, 2004.

Please remember that this Web site is for teens. This is their place. Take a look around the site if you like, but we prefer that you do not register on the site. If you would like to share your thoughts and comments about the site with us, please send them to twstaff@ppfa.org.

Planned Parenthood claims that "teenwire.com supports parents and teens communicating about sex", but they specifically request that parents not register on a Web site that informs teens in graphic detail about "changing bodies, choosing whether or not to have sex, protecting themselves from sexually transmitted infections, preventing pregnancy, and establishing relationships." Yet Planned Parenthood's words and actions (on their Web site and in Thursday's meeting) show that they are actively working against open communication between parents and teenagers on sexuality issues.

In my letter to you last month, I said that giving tax money to Planned Parenthood to fight cervical cancer is like giving tax money to the tobacco companies to fight lung cancer. An organization that encourages the very activity (early sexual intercourse among teens) that dramatically increases the risk of cervical cancer and supports the exclusion of parents and other taxpayers from a public meeting in violation of the Open Door Law does not deserve any taxpayer funds.

Four years ago President George W. Bush promised to be "a uniter, not a divider" when campaigning for President. Whether or not President Bush has fulfilled this promise is open for debate, but there is no question that it is a laudable goal to strive for. The Bloomington City Council, in giving taxpayer money to a controversial organization like Planned Parenthood, has chosen for five years in a row to be "a divider, not a uniter". I implore you to step away from the divisive policies of the past and not force taxpayers to fund Planned Parenthood, which not only operates an abortion clinic, but also works to separate teens from their parents and has shown contempt for the rule of law.
