Planned Parenthood should not get corporate welfare

By Scott Tibbs, May 31, 2013

Two years ago, the Indiana state legislature barred state tax dollars from going to abortion providers such as Planned Parenthood. The abortionists immediately sued, backed up by the Obama administration. Now, two years later, it appears Indiana has lost and will be forced to continue to subsidize the abortion industry.

But this was not just a defeat for Indiana's legislation. This was a defeat for state sovereignty and another expansion of federal power at the expense of the states and the people. Once again, the federal government is telling us how we must manage our own affairs and is taking away a little more of our right to self-government.

There was a time when this would have been unthinkable. It flies in the face of one of the fundamental principles this nation was founded to protect, the right of states to manage their own affairs.

This invented decision amounts to legislating by judicial fiat. There is no "right" for anyone - private individual or a "not for profit" corporation like Planned Parenthood - to receive money that the government confiscates from other taxpayers.

In fact, government places restrictions on what government benefits can be used to purchase all the time - food stamps cannot be used to purchase items other than food and the WIC program is much more restrictive than that. All Planned Parenthood had to do to be eligible for state fund is to stop killing babies. The fact that they refused to do so is very telling.

What the state should do next is nullify the federal decision, in the same way many jurisdictions have refused to enforce federal gun laws. Simply refuse to obey the court's decision and cut off funding to Planned Parenthood anyway. Force the Obama administration to make a decision - are they really willing to cut off funding for Hoosier children, the disabled and the poor in order to force the state to fund abortion providers?

Obama's reaction will tell us everything we need to know about who he really is.
